Exodus 2:1-10 NASB

1 Now a man from the house of Levi went and married a daughter of Levi. The woman conceived and bore a son; and when she saw that he was beautiful, she hid him for three months. But when she could hide him no longer, she got him a wicker basket and covered it over with tar and pitch. Then she put the child into it and set it among the reeds by the bank of the Nile. His sister stood at a distance to find out what would happen to him.

The daughter of Pharaoh came down to bathe at the Nile, with her maidens walking alongside the Nile; and she saw the basket among the reeds and sent her maid, and she brought it to herWhen she opened it, she saw the child, and behold, the boy was crying. And she had pity on him and said, “This is one of the Hebrews’ children.” Then his sister said to Pharaoh’s daughter, “Shall I go and call a nurse for you from the Hebrew women that she may nurse the child for you?” Pharaoh’s daughter said to her, “Go ahead.” So the girl went and called the child’s mother. Then Pharaoh’s daughter said to her, “Take this child away and nurse him for me and I will give you your wages.” So the woman took the child and nursed him. 10 The child grew, and she brought him to Pharaoh’s daughter and he became her son. And she named him Moses, and said, “Because I drew him out of the water.”

Notes

God destined Israel to become a mighty nation. Therefore, God made Israel grow in number. The growth threatened the Egyptians. Thus, the Egyptians tried to stop them from making babies through hard labor but they could not stop them. Pharaoh would then conspire with the midwives to kill the newborn boys, but the midwives disobeyed Pharaoh because they feared God. God would bless the midwives for protecting the babies. A massacre would then ensure. Pharaoh would command that all Hebrew male babies be thrown into the Nile River.

The massacre definitely grieved the Hebrew, but hope will arise. Moses would be born, the instrument that God would use to deliver the sons of Israel from the oppression of Egypt. Although Moses was born an Israelite, he would be educated as an Egyptian. God would prepare His leader.

  1. Moses’ mother hid him for three months until she could no longer hide him. She then put him in a waterproof basket. The basket floated the are where the daughter of Pharaoh took a bath.

  2. Pharaoh’s daughter and her maidens found the child. The crying baby toucher her heart. All the while, the sister of Moses, Miriam, was watching. She approached the princess and asked if she could look for a baby sitter.

  3. The princess agreed. Miriam called her mother. The princess asked the mother to nurse Moses and that the mother would be paid. When Moses was older, he was brought back to the princess.

Application

  1. Believe that in the midst of problems and chaos, God is at work to fulfill all His promises. No matter how terrible a situation is, do not lose hope. Instead, think of ways to preserve God’s blessings.

  2. Be quick-minded like Miriam. God can bring you to certain situations, divine appointments, that may change your situation. Seize the opportunity.

  3. God would use Moses to deliver Israel from Egypt. God used Jesus Christ our Lord to deliver us from sin. We must look to Christ for the salvation of our souls
