John 14:1-6
1 “Let not your hearts be troubled. Believe in God; believe also in me. 2 In my Father's house are many rooms. If it were not so, would I have told you that I go to prepare a place for you? 3 And if I go and prepare a place for you, I will come again and will take you to myself, that where I am you may be also. 4 And you know the way to where I am going.” 5 Thomas said to him, “Lord, we do not know where you are going. How can we know the way?” 6 Jesus said to him, “I am the way, and the truth, and the life. No one comes to the Father except through me.
Notes
The Lord Jesus explained what was about to happen: He would return to the Father. But His disciples could not join Him yet. He instructed them not to be troubled because He knew that His crucifixion would shock each of them. Jesus assured them they would be together again, but it would be in His Father’s house. However, He reminded them to believe in the Father and in Him, emphasizing again the unity of Father and Son. Moreover, He taught that He is the only way to the Father.
The Command
The Lord instructed them not to be troubled by His departure and to believe in God and Him. The author consistently reminded the reader that the Father and the Son are One. The Lord Jesus again emphasized that they should believe in God and Him.
1 “Let not your hearts be troubled. Believe in God; believe also in me (John 14:1).Application: We believe in the Father and the Son as One in essence, two in persons. Moreover, we will not be quickly troubled on earth knowing that Christ is with us now and after we shed our mortal bodies. In moments of uncertainties on earth, we will lean on His Sovereign grace for whatever outcome.
The Promise
The Lord assured them that after He departed, He would prepare a place for them and return to take them to where He would be going. The disciples could not go to His Father’s house then, but one day, they would, and they did.
2 In my Father's house are many rooms. If it were not so, would I have told you that I go to prepare a place for you? 3 And if I go and prepare a place for you, I will come again and will take you to myself, that where I am you may be also (John 14:2-3).Application: The Lord Jesus assured all who would believe that He would prepare a place in His Father’s house. Thus, we celebrate His promise, knowing He awaits us after our death. But remember that it is not mainly about the place but about the Lord Jesus. We will be with Him for eternity. Praise God!
The Way
The Lord stated earlier that He was going back to the Father. Then He made a statement that made Thomas wonder how they could know the way. The Lord Jesus revealed who He was and is. He is the way, the truth, and the life; Christ is the only way to the Father.
4 And you know the way to where I am going.” 5 Thomas said to him, “Lord, we do not know where you are going. How can we know the way?” 6 Jesus said to him, “I am the way, and the truth, and the life. No one comes to the Father except through me (John 14:4-6).Application: Our faith must be pure; the only way is the Lord Jesus Christ. He assures His disciples; if we are His disciples, meaning believers and followers, then we receive this assurance. Moreover, we will share and teach this truth that there is no other way, no other person, no other religion, and no other but through the Lord Jesus Christ.
