Sermon Introduction

The book of Proverbs is a collection of wise sayings. If we meditate and apply its wisdom, we will see God’s blessings on our personal lives, families, and communities. Conversely, if we do not apply the wisdom of Scripture, we risk reaping unwanted consequences. Every believer should be on a quest for biblical wisdom.

Proverbs 3:5-10 ESV

5 Trust in the Lord with all your heart,
     and do not lean on your own understanding.

In all your ways acknowledge him,
     and he will make straight your paths.

Be not wise in your own eyes;
     fear the Lord, and turn away from evil.

It will be healing to your flesh
     and refreshment to your bones.

Honor the Lord with your wealth
     and with the firstfruits of all your produce;

10 then your barns will be filled with plenty,
     and your vats will be bursting with wine.

Notes

The book of Proverbs is a collection of wise sayings. If we meditate and apply its wisdom, we will see God’s blessings on our personal lives, families, and communities. Conversely, if we do not apply the wisdom of Scripture, we risk reaping unwanted consequences. Every believer should be on a quest for biblical wisdom.

  1. Trust the Lord

    One must trust the Lord wholeheartedly, not rely on one’s understanding. And in all things, one must defer to the Lord’s guidance. The promise of such wisdom is a clear direction (3:5-6).

    5 Trust in the Lord with all your heart,
         and do not lean on your own understanding.
    In all your ways acknowledge him,
         and he will make straight your paths.

  2. Fear the Lord

    One should not be wise in his own eyes, which is a trait of one who fears the Lord. Another trait of the fear of the Lord is turning away from evil. The promise of such wisdom is healing and physical restoration (3:7-8).

    Be not wise in your own eyes;
        fear the Lord, and turn away from evil.
    It will be healing to your flesh
         and refreshment to your bones.

  3. Honor the Lord

    It is wise to honor the Lord with one’s wealth. In what way? By giving the first part of the produce, in other words, giving to the Lord first from one’s earnings. The promise of such wisdom is receiving abundance (3:9-10).

    Honor the Lord with your wealth
        and with the firstfruits of all your produce;
    10 then your barns will be filled with plenty,
         and your vats will be bursting with wine.

Application

  1. Trust His Word

    What does it mean to trust the Lord wholeheartedly? It means to trust His word with all our hearts. We should trust His word in all aspects of our lives, not just selected parts. If we do, God will give us clarity of direction.

  2. Respect His Word

    What does it mean to fear the Lord? It means we must respect His word and turn from evil. If we try to follow our world views and opinions instead of the word, then we do not fear the Lord; we try to be wise in our own eyes.

  3. Honor His Word

    We may honor the Lord by applying the wisdom from the word to honor Him from our wealth. Specifically, we should honor Him from the first part of what we earn. We should avoid giving from the last of what we earn.

Reflection & Discussion

  2. What does it mean to fear the Lord? What is the promise related to it?

  3. What does it mean to honor the Lord? What is the promise related to it?
