Sow Goodness

Galatian Liberty • Galatians 6:6-10 • September 4, 2022 • English Service 10:00 AM

Sermon Introduction

Paul highlighted the value of the gospel. He explained that anyone who preaches another gospel or a distorted gospel is cursed. He clarified that justification is by faith in Christ alone, and righteousness is by faith in Him alone. Any other source of justification and righteousness is false teaching. Anyone who finds righteousness in their own morality or works has abandoned the grace of God. Paul then explained that those who have faith in Him should walk by the Spirit and not give an opportunity to the flesh. And those who walk by the Spirit are led by the Spirit and will bear the fruit of the Spirit. Paul would then proceed to teach, bearing each other’s burden, blessing the teachers, sowing and reaping, and blessing the household of faith.

Galatians 6:6-10 ESV

6 Let the one who is taught the word share all good things with the one who teaches. 7 Do not be deceived: God is not mocked, for whatever one sows, that will he also reap. 8 For the one who sows to his own flesh will from the flesh reap corruption, but the one who sows to the Spirit will from the Spirit reap eternal life. 9 And let us not grow weary of doing good, for in due season we will reap, if we do not give up. 10 So then, as we have opportunity, let us do good to everyone, and especially to those who are of the household of faith.

Notes

  1. Share good things with the teacher

Paul instructed the believers to share all good things with their teachers. One reason is probably that teachers help carry the burden. Thus, one should share blessings with them (6:6).

6 Let the one who is taught the word share all good things with the one who teaches.

  2. Sowing and reaping

Paul wrote a proverbial statement about sowing and reaping. If one sows to the flesh, he will reap spiritual corruption. On the other hand, if one sows to the Spirit, one will reap eternal life from the Spirit (6:7-8).

7 Do not be deceived: God is not mocked, for whatever one sows, that will he also reap. 8 For the one who sows to his own flesh will from the flesh reap corruption, but the one who sows to the Spirit will from the Spirit reap eternal life.

  3. Goodness to the household of faith

Paul encouraged the believers to continue to sow good if there is an opportunity, especially to the household of faith. The reason he gave was that if they do not give up, they will reap the reward of sowing goodness (6:9-10).

    9
And let us not grow weary of doing good, for in due season we will reap, if we do not give up. 10 So then, as we have opportunity, let us do good to everyone, and especially to those who are of the household of faith.

Application

  1. Bless the teacher

There are many ways to bless our teachers in our church community. One is to practice the fruit of the Spirit with them, not the deeds of the flesh. Another practice is to share material blessings with them, like food and other blessings.

  2. Practice the principle

Sowing and reaping is a universal principle. One might even argue that it is a divine law set by God in the universe. If we sow potatoes, we will reap potatoes, not bananas.
If we sow good, we will reap blessings, if not, we will reap otherwise.

  3. Bless the community

Let us not get tired of doing good to others, especially to the household of faith.
We should make the most of every opportunity. And in due time, the Lord will
allow us to reap the blessing of sowing goodness.

Reflection & Discussion

  1. What should we share with our teachers? How may we apply?

  2. Explain the proverbial principle that Paul mentioned.

  3. What should we do in the household of faith? Why?
